Joker: Chapters 1-4
(I didn't mean for this to take up so much space, but Enjoy! SPOILER ALERT! T for swearing. FanFic based off D.Gray-man. Lavi never left the order.)
Night I: The Rank of Death
Allen sat alone in his dark and dismal cell. His food tray sat untouched in the corner of his cell. His ankles were rubbed raw from the shackles around his feet. Talismans covered the teen's innocence.
Speaking of whom, the Clown Crown itched with frustration. How could he protect his master all sealed up like this? Why was the Order doing this? The heart clearing wanted Allen out of prison, and he was sure that all exorcists felt her call to their innocence. The Clown Crown couldn't do anything right now in his master's most desperate time of need. That Noah was taking over, and since he had been sealed, there was nothing he could do.
He was upset with his weakness. It hadn't been able to protect Allen from the long haired exorcist with the sword of innocence. Because of that, the samurai had awakened the 14th, and then had Allen help him run away, only adding to the charges on Allen's head. He had been unable to stop the 14th from awakening. He had been unable to stop the two-spot Blondie that was always following Allen around from sealing himself. He had been unable to do anything as Allen was thrown into a cell and locked up. He couldn't even get his precious master to eat!
The list of things the Clown Crown blamed himself for goes on and on. He was ashamed because he had let Allen go through so much. Why couldn't he protect his Allen?
Allen had somewhat different feelings. While the Crown Clown blamed himself, Central, the samurai exorcist, and the 14th, Allen didn't blame anyone for this. He didn't blame Kanda or Alma, Link, or anyone from central. He didn't even blame Neah. If anything, Allen wanted to learn more about him.
Allen had resented and hated the Noah. But the truth was, he didn't know anything about him. He had hated the third exorcist when he first found out they were half akuma, but he had been proven wrong when he found out more about them. He had actually befriended one of them, but he hadn't been able to save them from the Earl. He didn't want to make the same mistake with the Noah. Sure, he wasn't just going to let him take over his consciousness, but he wasn't going to hate him anymore without knowing more about him.
So do you want to know more about me? Allen's eyes widened with shock and the Clown Crown twitched with further irritation. In his sealed state, he couldn't keep the Noah from talking to his Allen.
“Who are you?” Allen asked.
I should think that would be obvious. I am the player, Neah.
“How can you talk to me like this? You've only been able to do it briefly before.”
That is because Clown Crown has been suppressing me. With him sealed up like this he can't keep me from talking to you.
“Him?”
Yes innocence changes with their masters, including gender. The innocence is the same sex as their master.
“Well that's nice to know. But how do you know?”
When you have as much 'free time' as I do, and you only have one thing to do, you tend to do it.
“You talked with Clown Crown?” Allen asked him, confused.
Well, I did most of the talking. Clown Crown doesn't exactly talk. He just answered some of my questions. Ones that wouldn't matter much.
“How can he answer your if he can't talk to you?” Now Allen was even more confused.
He didn't talk, it was more like a communication of feelings.
“I thought innocence doesn't like the Noah. The whole innocence is the weakness of dark matter and visa verse.”
Yes... Most of the messages I got were something along the lines of 'Shut up and get the hell out'. Allen snickered at this.
“Well, at least he has a sense of humor.”
Oh no, he was dead serious. If Innocence-messages could kill, I'd have died. A LOT. Allen couldn't help but laugh. So glad to have been some source of laughter. He mentally said sarcastically, if that made any sense.
Allen then paused. This question had been eating at his mind ever since he first heard about the 14th. “Will you answer any questions I have?”
I don't see why not. You are technically the person I'm closest to. Allen cringed at that thought.
“You need a life.”
If you keep talking to me like that, people are going to think you've finally lost it.
“How else am I supposed to talk to you?”
Think it. I'll hear anything you say in your mind.
'Like this?'
Exactly.
'That gives me a lot of privacy.'
Get used to it.
'I'll just come out and say... I mean think it. Why did you betray the Earl?'
…
'I thought you said you would answer any question I had!'
Except that one.
'Fine then, how about why you chose me?'
…and that one.
'Why can't you not contradict yourself?'
It's one of my many bad qualities. By the way, Mr. Jr. Bookman has been standing in the corner for awhile now.
'What?! Since when?!' Allen's head snapped up and scanned the room, and sure enough, a very confused Lavi was watching him form the shadows of the cell.
Ever since I brought up the whole 'people will think you're crazy thing if you keep talking to me aloud' thing.
'Oh, now I understand.' Allen stared at the red headed teen a minute before saying “Lavi? I know you're there.” He stepped out of the shadows, looking, much like the cell, dark and dismal.
“Hey... moyashi.”
“My name is Allen.” He smiled weakly.
“Were you talking to... Neah?” Lavi asked.
“Well, yeah.”
“Why?! You sounded calm!” Lavi snapped. “You should hate him, damn it! You should fight him! Not talk all buddy-buddy with him in the cell THAT HE GOT YOU INTO!”
“No... I'm not going to make the same mistake twice...”
“What do you mean?!”
“The third exorcists. At first, I hated them without knowing anything about them. But then, I grew after I got to know one of them... Tokusa... all he wanted to do was fight to help win the war... but I wasn't able to save him...”
“That wasn't your fault!”
“...and it got me thinking... I did the same thing with Neah... I hated him without knowing anything about him...”
I'm touched.
'Oh, shut up.'
“So what you're saying is that you want to know more about Neah before you judge him.” Lavi said with disdain in his voice.
I love you too. And actually, I do pick my books out by their cover. I only read books with blue covers.
'That's just weird.'
You're very nice.
“Yes.” Allen answered Lavi.
Oh, now you're just going to ignore me.
'That's because I want you to shut your damn mouth for a minute.'
Such language. Allen was finding Neah to be very annoyingly sarcastic. He really wanted to punch him, but if he did, it would backfire. You'd only be hurting yourself.
'Seriously, can I talk to someone other than you for a few seconds?!'
Fine. I'll 'shut my damn mouth' for awhile.
“Thank you!” Allen exasperated.
“Huh?” Lavi looked, befuddled.
“Oh... oops...” He smiled sheepishly while rubbing the back of his head. “I said that out loud...”
“Were you talking to Neah?”
“Yeah... He can get really annoying. I couldn't get him to shut up to talk to you. It's kinda like... having you in my head.”
“There is no way I'm anything like that Noah!” Lavi burst.
Wow. Thanks. While the two unseen enemies would be glaring at each other, Allen just laughed.
“You guys can't even see each other and you're still fighting.” Allen gave him a warm smile. “I was just kidding.”
“Well, I better get going. I'm only supposed to be in here for a short time, and the only reason I was able to get in here because I'm a bookman.”
“Okay then.”
“By the way,” Lavi handed him a small plate -the ever unobservant Allen hadn't noticed it until now- and set it down beside him. Allen's mouth watered when he saw the mitarashi dango on the plate. “Lenalee wanted me to give this to you.”
“Could you tell her 'Thank you' for me?”
“No problem.” Then he left, leaving a blushing Allen behind.
Someone's got a girlfriend!
'Would you shut up!'
Why don't you eat? It's your favorite. For once, Allen complied.
Lavi sat down next to Lenalee. It had been about two hours since he had visited Allen.
“How was Allen-kun?” Lenalee asked.
“Well, he was a little more down than usual, but other than that, moyashi was fine.” Then he suddenly remembered something as spaghetti noodles hung out of his mouth. He quickly swallowed them and added “He said thanks, Lenalee.”
“I'm glad he enjoyed the dango.”
“Yeah.” An awkward silence came over the two of them. They hadn't talked much since Allen was imprisoned. If they did talk, it was usually about Allen.
It was then that a finder came over and tapped them on the shoulder. They both turned to look at the finder.
“Chief Komui wants you in his office.” They both immediately walked/jogged out of the mess hall.
When they reached Komui's office, they burst through the door.
“What's wrong nii-sa-” Lenalee stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Leverrier in her brother's usual chair, with him and Bak standing behind Leverrier. Lavi eyed them suspiciously. Leverrier smirked.
“Come in. Sit down. We have some things to talk about.” His honey-glazed-tarts voice. Lenalee hated that voice. They complied, while both of them noticed the Komui and Bak looked dark (which was highly uncharacteristic of the two of them).
“Do you ever remember Mr. Walker ever saying he could speak with the 14th?” Lenalee and Lavi were both set on edge by the question.
Lavi wondered about the conversation he had with Allen. 'Could it be related to that?' he asked himself. His mind was running a hundred miles an hour trying to decide what he would say. He had two choices: A) Tell the truth and have Allen be in even more trouble, or B) lie and keep Allen out of trouble but risk getting in even more trouble later on. He decided on the later.
“No.” was the simple lie he gave them.
“I haven't either.” Lenalee added.
“Is that so?” Leverrier's icy voice said. “Well, this recording might change your minds.” He took out a tape recorder and set it on the desk. He pressed 'play'.
“Who are you?” Lenalee's eyes widened. “Allen-kun?” she practically whispered.
“How can you talk to me like this? You've only been able to do it briefly before. Him? Well that's nice to know. But how do you know? You talked with Clown Crown? How can he answer if he can't talk to you?” Lavi had already come up with an excuse for Allen. He was crazy. For anyone listening to this conversation, they would believe it was quite likely.
Lenalee, on the other hand, was very much extremely scared. 'Did being in the prison finally make Allen snap?' She was scared one person from her family would wind up in a mental asylum.
And another question that was running through both their minds. 'Why was the Clown Crown even talking with a Noah?'
“I thought innocence doesn't like the Noah. The whole innocence is the weakness of dark matter and visa verse.” It droned on. Then, surprisingly, they heard Allen snicker over the device. “Well, at least he has a sense of humor.” Then there was more laughter and after a pause, Allen's voice grew serious. “Will you answer any questions I have? You need a life. How else am I supposed to talk to you?”
It was then that Leverrier pushed the 'stop' button. “Shall I tell you the rest of what happens? Well, Jr. here talks with the 14th, and knew about their ability to communicate. It is now official. Allen Walker is the 14th and shall be labeled as a traitor.” He stood up. “Mr. Link, call the rest of the Crow to bring Allen in for questioning. If he doesn't talk... feel free to torture him.”
Night II: Torture Problems
“Only evil things...?” The voice came from nowhere. “So, Why are you suffering?”
Allen was pinned to the wall. His sword bit into his flesh. Pain crawled through his entire system. Why was his sword hurting him so much? It was only supposed to hurt the bad things, so why is it hurting him?
Allen took sometime to survey the landscape. He was in the ruins of a town, with towering buildings now layed crooked and barley able to stay up.
“Stupid child...” The voice continued. “Did you really think that the host body for the 14th could be without sin?”
'Where... is this?' Allen thought.
“You didn't salvation to all those tarnished souls, it was the lift hand of God.” The voice was just droning what Allen himself already knew. He thought every word 'the voice' said was true. “You're soul is the one that needs to be saved.”
'Ah... What is this? A dream?' But that just brought up even more questions? If it was just a dream, how could he feel pain? 'It's not a very good dream. Wake up... Wake up~~'
“Allen.” He stared in shock at the familiar clown in front of him. “Why are you standing around being like that, 'Allen'?” He said happily as he reached out his hand.
Allen's face screamed 'What the hell?'.
“Come on 'Alle-' hurry up!” The clown jumped up and down. 'Ma-' “There's a guest waiting for you.” '-na?'
Allen felt as if tears would cascade down his cheeks any minute now. He was really seeing Mana!
“They've been waiting for a long time 'A--'.” His painted face was lit with a knowing smile. “Come on!”
Allen reached out. 'Forget that last statement.' Suddenly he was a little kid again. 'It's a good dream...' Mana grasped his small blood-red hand and led an ecstatic little Allen through the ruins of the city.
“Hurry, hurry ''---'.” Mana said as he jogged into the distance, dragging Allen with him.
“Hey... Hold on Mana!” He said as Mana dragged him. A sweat drop formed on the back of his head. “I'm not '---'. Just call me, Allen, okay?”
'Call me-'
Allen was abruptly woken up by someone yanking him to his feet.
“Wake up, traitor!” a harsh voice snapped as Allen slowing opened his eyes. He was surrounded by men, two of which had hoisted him up by his arms. He tried to move, but he just couldn't seem to get himself to.
“Don't struggle. You've been given a paralyzing medicine. You won't be able to move.” The man holding his right shoulder hissed.
'Hell of a wake up call...' Allen thought groggily as they literally dragged him out of his cell.
You're telling me. I was having a rather pleasant dream, too.
'You dream?'
'Well, what do you think I spend most of my time doing? There's not much to do when you're host gets himself thrown into a dungeon.
'Oh shut up.'
What that person said has been true. Allen couldn't move an inch. He wondered what this was all about, but figured it would blow over soon enough and started to drift back to sleep.
HEY! MOYASHI!
'AHH!' It was lucky that he couldn't move, otherwise he would've screamed in front of the Crow. 'What was that for?'
You're being bragged who-knows-where by the people who want you dead and you start to fall asleep? You must be really drugged up.
'When did they give me the drugs?'
How should I know? I was asleep. But I think I know how.
'Really? Go ahead and say it.'
You've only eaten one thing in the past couple days-
'No.'
-it had to be the dango Lavi gave you.
'No.'
There's no other way. Just face it... you're 'friends' betrayed you.
'Be quiet.'
Haven't you noticed? Everyone was distancing themselves from you.
'Shut up.'
No one wanted to be close to you,
'SHUT UP!'
Because they were afraid of what you would do to them.
'SHUT UP! SHUT UP! JUST SHUT UP!' but his master's voice echoed in his head. You have to kill the people important to you.
It's alright. Neah soothed. Just go to sleep. I'll handle everything from here. And I promise I won't hurt any of your friends. He began to sing a soft lullaby. It comforted and surrounded Allen in warm reassurance. For once, the Crown Clown let Neah do what he wanted. He actually thought it was a good idea. To postpone his Allen's pain for awhile... until everything was alright. Allen drifted off into a deep sleep.
Neah slowly opened Allen's eyes. Wow, those drugs are really strong. About all he could move was his mouth, eyes, and neck. Although it was more than Allen, it was still a lot less movement than Neah was comfortable with. The Crown Clown sent him an innocence-message-thing. He than decided to start calling it an IM.
It said something like: 'I can flush the drugs out of his system, but it'll take awhile. Stall.'
At least it's a start. Neah thought dryly. He kept himself in his 'white' form, so they wouldn't know that the actual Allen was blissfully asleep. Neah was too lost in thought about what to do to notice that his carriers/captors had stopped in front of a heavily bolted door. They walked in, and the sudden change in light is what snapped Neah out of his thoughts.
He looked up to find himself in, big surprise, another cell. But this one looked different. In the middle, there was... well... Neah hadn't ever seen anything like it before. It was composed of three poles welded together to make vertical square, with clamps on and in front of it. When Neah realized what it was for he visibly shivered. Oh shit...
He was dragged to the torture thingy and made to kneel in front of it. His arms were brought behind his back and raised to the clamps on the top pole, where he was strapped in. The clamps in front of it were secured just under his knees, preventing him from slumping into a more comfortable position. It was a crude device, but, as Neah found it, very effective in making someone very unpleasant.
Oh, who was he kidding. It hurt like hell. Hid shoulders felt like they would pop out of their sockets any minute. Neah grit his teeth to keep from screaming.
Neah opened hid eyes and further surveyed the room. That's when he noticed a certain red haired rabbit in the corner.
“Bastard...” Neah growled. Lavi's eye's were emotionless, practically dead. “Of course... I was never your friend or comrade... Bookmen don't need those... and they certainly don't have hearts.” Neah scorned him.
Lavi bit his toung. He had to remain silent. He had to observe, and nothing else. He wanted to run up to 'Allen' and tell him it was alright. To get him out of that torture. He wanted to tell 'Allen' that he was his friend... but what he wanted didn't matter.
Bookman tapped Lavi's shoulder. “I think it's best if you leave.” Lavi nodded and left, but not before 'Allen' said one last thing.
“We're just ink on paper to you...” With that, Lavi fled the room.
Neah glared at the fleeing teen and then circulated his glares to pretty much everyone in the room. One of the Crow set a chair down in front of him. Leverrier sat in it and smirked down on him.
“Allen Walker, or more precisely, the 14th.” How come no one can ever remember my name? Ne-ah. Two syllables. Ooo... so hard.
“I'm Allen.” Neah lied.
“Let's just get straight to the questioning. Can you talk with the 14th?”
“No.” Leverrier cast a glance at one of the Crow and he grabbed Neah's right hand. He snapped his pinky like it was a toothpick. Neah howled. Damn that Crow!
“That was a test question. We already knew the answer. There will be ones like that. If we know that you lied or you don't answer, a finger is snapped. If we run out of fingers on your right hand, we'll move to toes. If we run out of toes, then we'll move onto ribs, then your right arm, then legs. Are we clear?”
“...” There goes my ring finger... the Earl wasn't even this cruel. Neah thought through the pain. He decided it would be easier to just say absolutely nothing and wait until Crown Clown had purified all the drugs. When he wasn't sealed, Neah knew it would only take the innocence a couple seconds to do this, but now? Not so much.
“What did the 14th say to you?”
“...” Now his middle finger. Aw... I wanted to use that.
An hour later, Neah was in a pathetic condition. Pretty much all the bones in his body, save his neck, jaw, skull, spine, hip, and all of his left arm were broken. When they ran out of bones to brake, the ripped the bottom of his pants off and started slitting his forelegs with a knife. Very nice.
Now he was becoming dizzy from blood loss when he got an IM from Crown Clown. 'Done.'
That's great... only, I can't move right now.
'Stupid Noah.'
Right back at ya.
Crown Clown and Neah focused all everything they had at the seals. It was honestly Allen's last hope.
To explain this, both Allen and Neah were receiving the wounds. Allen just wasn't conscious and he could survive a lot less than Neah. Currently, as any human would be, Allen was near death.
They had to act fast or they wouldn't be able to get out in time to save Allen. Finally, after much effort on their part, the seals broke. The Crown Clown immediately activated, breaking the restraints on Neah. Neah was too tired to even feel the urged to destroy it. It's a good thing I already have most of my plan done... he thought as he drift into a painful sleep.
The Crown Clown was greatly annoyed and distressed at the same time. Both Neah and his Allen were unconscious. He wrapped the crown belt around his master carefully, then proceeded to 'IM' Neah a scream. He woke up with a start.
What?!
'Open the ark.'
Fine.
The ark door opened in front of Neah as he quietly sung 'The Key' under his breath. He walked, with a lot of help from Crown Clown, through the door and into the piano room. He collapsed on the sofa to rest a bit. Crown Clown IM ed him.
'What's this plan?'
Transfer myself into a body me and the ark have been making for awhile. It takes a lot of time, but it should be done.
'You're gone forever?'
Out of Allen's body, yes.
'I'm all for it.'
Don't worry, I'll still stick around with you and Allen.
'Oh, great.'
Neah shattered all of the doors to the ark and walked, again, with much help, over to the wall and pressed on it as it disappeared, showing a small bed with a man on it. He looked to be asleep, but Neah knew he was just an empty shell. Neah limped over to it, and touched the body's forehead. He had one shot at this.
A person is only meant to have one soul in a body. Allen had three, making it extremely hard for the body to support all three. As it was, the weakest soul would die first in a situation like this. Since Allen's soul was human, he was the weakest. If one of the souls was relived from the body, then Allen's chances of living were over tripled.
Despite himself, Neah had actually gotten attached to this exorcist. Anyway, Neah was technically Allen's uncle. So, he did have a right to have a bond with Allen.
Neah closed his eyes and let the dark matter swell up in him. He let all his memories flow from him and into the empty body in front of him.
God, I hope this works... was Neah's last thought before blacking out.
Night III: Enter Rose
Rose was standing in a train station. She didn't recognize it, nor could she read the language the signs were in.
“Allen-kun!” Called a girl with long emerald black pig tails. She was waving, as if trying to get someone over there. Rose looked at her.
'Why is she calling me “Allen-kun?”' she thought. Then, her feet started to carry her over to the other girl.
“Sorry Lenalee, I got held up.” Rose gasped as the words came out of her mouth, but it wasn't her voice. She smiled against her will and walked onto the train. She managed to catch her reflection in the dull metal on the side of the train.
Rose was a boy with white hair and silvery blue eyes. He had a scar over his left eye, and long black coat on.
'Who are you?'
Rose sat up in her bed. “Why was I having such a weird dream?” she wondered aloud. She groggily rubbed her teal eyes and jumped out of bed. She threw the first dress she happened to grabbed on and quickly ran a brush through her short black hair.
She raced out the door, effectively dodging all of the maids and any relatives. She didn't want them to see what she had done to her hair. If they found out she cut her long hair, they would be so angry. But at least no one would notice around her house for while.
Rose was the youngest daughter of a very rich family, the 'Ham' family.
'Rose Ham.' She thought. 'What a god awful name.' She frequently got teased for her name, but whenever she went to talk to her parents, they just shrugged her off. She let out a scornful 'huff' and turned left at a street corner.
It wasn't her usual route, but she had to make a little detour. Rose hid a little slip of paper in the folds of her dress and casually dropped it in front of the jewelery store. As she walked to her school, she heard the astonished and scared cries of the shop keeper behind her.
Rose smirked with anticipation.
Neah slowly opened his eyes, and immediately regretted it. He felt like a train hit him, then he came back to life and got hit by a train again. He started to roll over to go back to sleep, but a someone tapped his shoulders. He sat up to see Allen staring at him.
“WHAT THE-” Then he remembered he wasn't in Allen's body anymore. “Ugh... Allen don't do that to me again.”
“Where's Allen?” He replied. Neah stared at the young exorcist then smiled.
“Alright. Very funny.”
“Not joking. Where's Allen?” Neah stared blankly at him.
“Then who-”
“Crown Clown.”
“You took Allen's body over?”
“Yes.”
“Then where's Allen?”
“What I asked you.”
“So... if he's not with you... and he's not with me...” Neah voice was becoming more and more shaken. “Then where is he? OH SHIT!”
Allen, or Crown Clown, looked at Neah questioningly. Neah already knew that Crown Clown tended not to talk much, and since he wasn't used to 'talking', his words were usually muddled and hoarse.
“I think... that I may have... accidentally sent Allen to another body.” Crown Clown simultaneously punched the Noah, causing the aches in his body to roar with agony. He crouched in ball until most of the pain subsided.
When Neah sat up, he expected to see an apologetic Crown Clown. But instead, he was sticking his tough out at Neah.
“Wow. You're so nice.”
“Need to find Allen.”
“Yes, yes. We'll find Allen.” Neah said as he dusted his shirt off. “Let's see... I'll start with explaining how the whole body transfer thing worked. The ark has a giant heap of energy in it, and I'm the only one who can access it. By telling the ark what to do, it made me a body. But I guess you let me keep all the injuries Levrear-”
“?”
“My name for the bastard Leverrier.” Crown Clown nodded in approval making Neah chuckle. “-gave me.” He nodded at that too.
“So, let's start, shall we?” Neah stood up and started to leave, but stopped when he caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror. The new body he created had midnight black hair, with black-brown eyes that almost matched.
He cursed under his breath when he realized his age. He was going for twenty-five, or something around there, but instead, the artificial body was twelve. Why hadn't he noticed it earlier? His shortness? His high-pitched voice?
“Great! Now I'm some damn little brat!!!”
Rose placed the mask over her face and slipped out the window. Her long baggy sleeves flapped around her as she fell from the second story window of her house. She landed on the ground with a light 'thud'.
She sprinted across the lawn and into the trees, running like a bullet. She raced into the woods and followed a path she had marked for herself earlier that day.
When she reached the store she used the floor as a springboard and jumped thought the window into the store. As she suspected, cops were guarding the front entrance.
She smirked. 'They're never gonna learn, are they?' The thought made her chuckle. She opened the burlap sac she had brought with her and started loading the jewelry up.
Stealing is wrong, you know.
“WHAT THE-!” Rose yelled in surprise. She cursed under her breath as the cops raced into the store. They quickly surrounded her, guns pointed. Acting fast, Rose grabbed a card out of the small pocket strapped to her thy.
“Jack of Clubs.” She whispered to herself and smiled.
“Innocence, activate.” Rose whispered as the Jack in her hand started to glow.
Neah walked along the forest path. He was still achy -not to mention pissed about the whole being twelve thing- but not enough to keep him from walking. He was currently in Ireland, looking for Allen. It was all a wild goose chase, but Neah mostly did it to satisfy Crown Clown, who was in England. The innocence hadn't stopped looking for Allen in the past hours.
Neah knew it would be next to impossible to find Allen when he didn't when he didn't even look like Allen. What's more, Allen's consciousness could have gone to anyone. Neah didn't even know if Allen was awake or not, so, as said previously, it would be really hard to find Allen.
He quickened his pace, annoyed by how his short legs wouldn't carry him as fast as he would like.
“Man, I HATE being so small!” Neah said to no one in particular. After a minute of this furious pace, he bent over exhausted.
“Man... huff, huff... I need to get in shape.”
Neah was about to open the ark and leave this place, when a sudden explosion threw him through the air and he crashed into a tree. He slid down on the ground. His previous injuries all came back in a rush of pain, something similar to waking up a giant bear.
His vision was getting blurry, but he could make out the rough shape of a level three akuma. Neah cursed himself.
'Getting killed by an akuma... how pathetic.' Neah thought dryly. 'Well, this is it. I can't move...'
Neah started to reflect on his life. He wondered what his life would be like if he never became a Noah. Then he stopped himself realizing that this was turning into one of those sappy death scenes he hated.
The akuma's hand-cannon glowed a dark purple as it prepared to give the Noah his pathetic death. Neah watched as the bullet flew towards him, and sighed.
Just as Neah gave up all hope of ever returning, a flash of green light stopped the bullet. Neah vision got darker and darker until all he could see was blackness.
Neah opened his eyes. He quickly sat up. Instead of the white piano room he expected, he saw he was in a dirty hut. He rubbed his eyes, then sat up.
“Why am I not dead?” Neah wondered aloud. That's when he saw a girl in the corner. She looked at him, her eyes close to dead.
“What's up with you?” He asked. She just looked at him.
“Do you have a name?” She shook her head slowly. “No name?” Neah gave the girl a closer look. She had dirty brown hair and the most remarkable violet eyes. She wore a ragged dress that looked like it had just taken a mud bath it was so dirty. Her face, arms and legs were covered in bruises.
“Can you talk at all?” He asked, a little annoyed. She shook her head again. Neah stared at her in utter shock.
“You're a mute?” She nodded her head. Her beautiful violet eyes locked onto his, as if waiting for more questions. He blushed slightly, then mentally slapped himself. 'Now's not the time to be looking at girls, Neah!' He scolded himself.
Neah looked back at the girl. “Well, this is no good!” The girl gave him a confused look. “I can't just keep calling you 'the girl'. You need a name.”
The girl looked down, then started to write in the dust. Neah looked over her shoulder to see what she wrote.
'Monsters don't need names.'
Night IV: Nightmares
Lenalee ran through the destroyed Order. The red sky loomed above her as she ran. The wrecked cobble stone pathway crumbled underneath her feet. Her lungs stung with the effort of running; her throat soar from panting. Her short ear length emerald black hair whisked around her face. The back moon smiled insanely down at her. The weight of her depression threatened to crush her.
She wanted to see his face. The face of the person she loved. She wanted to see his lovely white hair, and the smile that could light up the whole room.
“Allen-kun!” She called as she ran. Tears streamed down her eyes. “Why can't I find you...” She sobbed.
Then, she saw a person up ahead. The person was wearing a long exorcist coat. She briefly wondered why the person was wearing the old silver and black uniform and not the new red and black ones. She thought that the person was a teenage boy, a bit younger than herself. He had his hood pulled over his head, and his back to her.
As she came closer, she finally recognized him.
“Allen-kun!” She cried a smile spreading over her face as her tears of despair turned to tears of joy. She started skidding to a stop when she reached him. Lenalee raised her hand and placed it on her shoulder. 'Why isn't he responding to anything?' She questioned.
As soon as she touched him, Allen dissolved away to reveal a shadow of a man. It turned to look at her, an everlasting smile spread from ear to ear over his featureless face. Two white holes were the only eyes had to speak of, and they were fixed on Lenalee.
Lenalee let out a horrible scream, wishing for the person who had just left to come save her from all her fears and nightmares.
“He'll never come back. He thinks you betrayed him.” Her eyes grew wide as she listened to his struggling voice. “He's already found someone else.”
Lenalee sat up in her bed, sweating. She rubbed her eyes. She wondered why she had that strange dream, but then the memories came back in a flash.
{Flash Back}
Lenalee and Lavi raced to Allen's new cell, the had just gotten clearance to get him out of there. What met them was something that horrified them.
The cramped prison room's floor towards the center was caked with dried blood. Above the blood, a crude and hideous contraption stood looming over the blood. It looked like something pulled right out of the medieval days. Komui ran up behind them, followed by Johnny, Reever, and Marie. Their eyes widened.
“Where's Allen-kun?” Lenalee asked hoarsely. She slowly walked into the cell and dropped to her knees at the pool of dried blood.
“He's gone.” Leverrier walked in from the door. “He ran away without answering a single one of our questions.”
“That's because you tortured him!” She accused.
“We only wanted answers. He could've spared himself the pain. But I'm not too worried about him. By the state he was in, he couldn't have lasted much longer. I'd be surprised if the little traitor brat is still hanging on.”
Rage raced through Lenalee's body, filling her with energy. 'Hoe dare he say that!' She clenched her teeth and flew at him. She was jerked back by Marie, who had heard her heartbeat spike and knew what she was going to do. Komui quickly grabbed her other hand and looked at her with pleading eyes.
Lenalee's anger flowed away, leaving nothing but the endless sea of despair.
{End of Flash Back}
She let the tears flow down her face. She had never believed Allen was a traitor. But now, she wasn't so sure. She didn't blame him if he ran away, and she knew by the amount of blood that he couldn't be alive. She wished with every fiber of her being that she could stay in his arms forever.
She hadn't moved from her fetal position on her bed for three days. She hadn't even eaten anything, though people always remembered to bring her something. Her current meal lay untouched on her bedside table.
She let a new wave of sobs wrack her body. Tears pored from her eyes. They trickled down her face and landed on the soft lilac sheets.
Lavi stood outside her door. He listened to her cries. He wanted to go in and comfort her, but he wouldn't know what to say. So he just stood outside her door.
Rose listened with interest to the voice inside her head. She sat in her bed, where she had walked back from her almost failure of a robbery.
“Okay, let me get this straight. There are demons called Akuma and they're made by the Millennial Earl, who makes them by going to grieving people and offering to bring back the deceased.”
Uh-huh. The Voice replied.
“And to defeat the Akuma, you have to have something called innocence?”
Right.
“And the innocence chooses people to use them. They're called exorcists?”
Yep.
“And you're telling me that I'm an exorcist. And that you're one, too. And you somehow wound up in my head.”
Yes.
“Great.” Rose blew a loose lock of hair out of her face. “I'm going crazy.”
If you're crazy, what does that make me?
“The person voice thingy that makes me insane.”
Trust me. I know how you feel.
“What? Do you have a voice talking to you in your head?”
Well... I did. I don't know where he went.
“Great. So the thing that makes me a lunatic is an x-lunatic.”
It does sound bad when you put it like that...
“I'm getting tired. I'm going to go to bed now. Close your eyes, or whatever.”
Huh? Then a rush of embarrassment came from him as she pulled her Black Rose costume up over her head and pulled on a nightgown.
“Okay, you can look.”
Alright... Sorry about that... I've never shared a body with a girl...
“And I've never shared a body with anyone. Have you?”
Yeah... You know the whole x-lunatic comment?
“Oh.” She his her Black Rose costume. The tight black shirt had an unused hood with long oversized sleeves and it ended with a belt and a ruffle over the small black shorts. The boots came to her shins. She pulled out the bottom of her wardrobe and threw the outfit in. She also put the black mask on top.
The only thing that she didn't put there was her cards. She never went anywhere without them.
That's your innocence.
“What?” Then Rose stopped to ponder this for a moment. “I guess that could be possible. That would explain why they have powers. How do you know so much about this stuff? Ya know, now that I think about it you haven't told me anything about yourself.”
It's a long story. I'll tell you in the morning.
“Okay.” Rose placed the cards, their black case and all, in the drawer of her bedside table. She rested her head atop the fluffy pillow and pulled the covers under her chin. Being the heavy sleeper she is, Rose fell right asleep.
A/N: I was too lazy to go back in the manga to see what Allen and Mana actually said here. This is just the stuff I remember, so forgive me if some of it's wrong...
“Mana!” Rose felt her lips move and she heard the voice that slipped out of her mouth, but she knew that neither was hers. She had no control. She was just watching from the eyes of the person she knew she'd see in the mirror.
'She' ran over to a man wearing a top hat and a simple outfit. 'She' hugged his legs.
“Allen. There you are.” He looked back at Mana, tears brimming in his eyes.
“I'm sorry! I didn't mean to get lost.” The child sobbed.
“It's alright I know you didn't mean too...”
*
“Mana! Get up! Please! You're going to be alright!” The little brunette cried. He clenched his hands.
Mana reached up and grabbed the boy's hand. “Never stop... Keep on walking...” And with that, the man died.
*
The memories flash through her dreams, one after the other. Rose couldn't stop them. Her head felt like it would rip itself apart at any minute. She was forced to endure years of memories... of people... She knew who they belonged to, but she couldn't figure out why she was getting all of his memories.
*
“Mana!” He screamed. A flash of purple lightning struck the odd structure in front of them. The skeletal object in front of him started to creep forwards.
“I curse you, Allen Walker!” It screamed as it brought it's metal arm that had morphed into a sword over his left eye.
Tears flowed down his cheeks. He wrapped both his hands around his eye, the warm liquid running over his hands and dripping onto the ground.
“Mana...” The boy sobbed. Suddenly, his left arm glowed green and turned into a giant white claw. Having a mind of it's own, it raced forward, all the while the boy begged it to stop.
“Don't hurt Mana!” He plead went ignored as the claw closed in, knock the akuma into a nearby tree. But it didn't stop there. It pursued the crippled akuma, and it ruthlessly attacked it.
Mana gave one last thing to his son before he was destroyed. “Allen, I love you. Please destroy me.” And with that, the boy had lost the most important person to him for a second time. But this time, it had been all his fault.
*
The enormity of the dreams were crushing Rose. Years of experiences, dreams, feelings, and thoughts flashed through her mind. It felt like she was suffocating.
*
“Allen-kun!” An explosion was heard to the right. The teen stared at it in disbelief. He watched as the akuma's soul was dragged away, reaching out one of his hands towards him.
“HELP ME!!!” It cried. Then, it just exploded. There wasn't anything left of the akuma's soul. He was to shell shocked to move. He had been so close. What stopped him?
Liquid spilled out of his left eye, and he knew it wasn't water. Pain erupted from it. He bent over, clutching it, mortified he couldn't do anything... again.
A/N: Sorry about the lack of detail from here down... I'm really tired.
Rose sat up in her bed. She pressed her hands to her left eye.
It was wet.
She pulled her hands away, and gasped as she saw the dark red substance covering her hands.
Rose stumbled out of the bed. She tripped over her foot and crashed into her night stand, toppling the glass oil lamp (which was luckily unlit) that shattered on the ground. It created quite a sound that bounce across the halls.
Rose's door was promptly thrown open and four fuming men walked in.
“Really Rosette?! You can't keep quite for one ******* night?!” Her father stomped over to her, grabbing her by the hair. “And you cut your hair?! Now what dumb ass man are we going to get to take you off our hands!”
As he caught sight of the blood he dropped her and disgust crossed his face. Her other three brothers also had that same look.
Rose grit her teeth. 'Don't look at me like that!' She silently seethed. Her father backed away. “I'll leave you to think about what you've done.” He fled the room and slammed the door (her brothers had already left).
Click.
And she knew she wouldn't be able to get out. She was locked in.
Lenalee sat at a table with Lavi, Miranda, Timothy, and Krory. They idly chatted while Lenalee just watched. She poked at her food.
“Your not supposed to play with your food!” Lavi joked. Lenalee stood up and picked up her tray.
“I'm not in the mood...” She walked to a trash can and dumped the contents of the tray into it. That just made her even more glum.
It reminded her of Allen.
She would always just give him her scraps.
“Lenalee and Lavi, please report to my office.” Her brothers voice rang out over the intercom. She walked out of the mess hall, Lavi right on her heels. They reached Komui's office in about five minutes.
They sat on the small sofa and Komui sat at his desk.
“I've got a mission for the two of you.” He said. “We have reports of a phantom thief said to have super natural powers. We think that the person in question is an accommodater. Your mission is to simply to catch them. Are you familiar with the Black Rose?”
Kaiya: Chapter 1, Beginnings
As sunlight drifts in through the dirty window a teenage girl struggles to pull herself out of the midnight dream world and back into reality.
Beyond her window the town is still. Silent. The only things that are moving are the workers bustling out of the mines, and the elevator that brought them up from the bowls of the earth. Accompanying their hurried footsteps is the sound of metal upon metal as the elevator slides back down into the darkness awaiting new passengers.
The girl is standing now, putting clothes on her skinny frame and tying up her light brown hair with a silver ribbon. Around her on the floor are hundreds of gears, blueprints, and mechanical parts scattered about in random. Next to her cracked and dusty mirror a photo of a smiling man gazes up at her. Dad.
From her doorway a voice calls.
“Kaiya. You need to get going. Your shift is starting soon.”
The voice belongs to a little girl, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes and dragging a battered teddy bear behind her. She has the same hair as the other girl but shorter and falling around her face in curls.
“I know that Liz.” Replies the older of the two “I am always on time.”
At this the two laugh. Then they hug each other and head down the short hallway into the kitchen beyond, where the smell of slightly burnt food lingers in the air.
“Mom? Are you COOKING?!” Asks the older girl, Kaiya.
“Trying to!” Replies the mother with a short laugh.
The girl’s mother is dressed in casual clothes, baggy jeans and an oversized t-shirt. The only startling thing about her is the fact that she is beautiful and it looks like an oil-spewing monster attacked her. Oil stains cover her clothes and blueprints and a wrench are visible in her pockets. All the signs of a mechanic, which she happened to be. Evidently, it is an unusual sight to the girls. Their mom out of the workshop and trying to cook.
“You never tried to cook before dad left.” Mentioned the little girl Liz.
A tense silence followed her words and Kaiya clenches her fists.
“Today is special!” Says their mom in a poor attempt to break the silence, “Today is Kaiya’s first day of working in the mines!”
Suddenly Liz bursts into tears. Kaiya rushes over and tries to calm her wild sobbing.
“Why do you have to go Kaiya?” she cries as the tears stream down her anguished face, “I want you to stay and build machines like you always used to! I want to sneak into momma’s work shop to see what she’s doing!”
“I’m still going to be here!” Kaiya assures her, “I will only be gone for a few hours during the day then I will come right back home.”
“You promise?” Liz asks sniffing away her tears and gazing up hopefully at her sister.
“I promise,” Kaiya says, wiping away the lingering moisture in her sister’s eyes.
A short while later Kaiya is waving goodbye to her little sister and smiling in a reassuring way to hide the dread she felt inside. The mines. Deep, dark, and sinister. The very air is filled with the sick black coal and miles of heavy earth hide the sun from the workers tired eyes. At any moment the ground above you can collapse as it did so many weeks ago. She closes her eyes trying to shut out the image of the rows of coffins laid out in the grass. One reads Jake Rhode. Suddenly a clang brings her out of her awful daydream.
The elevator going down to the mines has appeared; ready to take her down into the blackness.
